## Song meaning

“Ephphatha (Be Opened)” begins the album at the threshold of mystery. In On the Mysteries, Saint Ambrose recalls Christ’s command “Ephphatha,” meaning “Be opened,” and explains the opening of the ears and mouth so that the candidate can hear, understand, remember, and answer the questions of faith. The song preserves that ritual simplicity through brief commands and repeated responses. It then extends the image inward by asking that the heart also be opened. That is a poetic development rather than an additional body part named by Ambrose, expressing the deeper conversion toward which the outward rite points. “Not just the surface—the unseen” draws on Ambrose’s broader contrast between visible sacramental actions and the grace they communicate. Even the long instrumental spaces serve the meaning: the listener must become quiet enough to receive. Before the album speaks about water, oil, Eucharist, prayer, and the Spirit, it begins with receptivity—ears awake, heart awake, ready to remember and believe.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Mysteries, Chapter 1, sections 3–4, together with Christ’s command “Ephphatha” in Mark 7:31–37 and Ambrose’s teaching about unseen sacramental grace.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock; real jammer; slow-to-mid build with BIG instrumental breaks; huge stereo pads + shimmering bells; delay-guitar hook; gated drums come in waves; bright countertenor male vocals used sparingly like a chant; minimal lyric, repeated refrains; reverent threshold-energy

# Track 2: Buried with Him

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/buried-with-him/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

You stepped into the water

that looked like any other stream—

stone and shadow, common earth,

nothing more than it had seemed.

But heaven leaned into the moment,

though your eyes could only see:

what is touched by grace eternal

is not what it appears to be.

[Pre-Chorus]

Do not trust the surface only,

do not weigh it by the sight—

what is seen is passing shadow,

what is unseen breathes with life.

[Chorus]

You were buried with Him,

in the deep where sin grows still.

You were buried with Him,

in the silence of His will.

Dead to the world that fades and lies,

raised to God, to endless light—

you were buried with Him,

and you rose to life that night.

[Verse 2]

You confessed the name of Father,

you confessed the Son made known,

you confessed the living Spirit—

hold the order you were shown.

Not the water did the healing,

not the river, not the tide—

but the grace that moved beneath it

when the cross stood at your side.

[Pre-Chorus]

Remember what your voice has spoken,

remember what your heart has sworn—

faith has shaped you in that descent,

and a new self has been born.

[Chorus]

You were buried with Him,

where the old self met its end.

You were buried with Him,

where the grave became a womb again.

Dead to sin, its weight undone,

raised to God, forever free—

you were buried with Him,

and you rose to eternity.

[Bridge]

Seven times the river called,

and nothing changed within—

until obedience met mercy,

and grace did what water never did.

So do not doubt what touched you there,

do not call that moment thin—

what God has sealed in mystery

no power can unbegin.

[Final Chorus]

You were buried with Him,

not in symbol, not in name—

but in truth that breaks the darkness,

in resurrection flame.

Dead to the world, its empty breath,

alive to God, His victory—

believe this now with steady heart:

these waters were not empty.

Were not empty

## Song meaning

“Buried with Him” turns Saint Ambrose’s baptismal teaching into a personal passage through death and resurrection. In On the Mysteries, Ambrose reminds the newly baptized that they confessed Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, died to the world, were buried in water, and rose to God and eternal life. His insistence that “the waters are not empty” becomes the song’s central conviction. The stream may look ordinary, but its sacramental meaning cannot be measured by sight alone. The Spirit, Christ’s cross, and Naaman’s washing come from Ambrose’s wider explanation of divine action through water. “The grave became a womb” poetically joins burial with regeneration: the old life ends, but a new person rises. Likewise, “not in symbol, not in name” rejects the idea of an empty label, not Ambrose’s own use of biblical figures. The song asks the baptized person to trust that the visible act truly carries the grace it promises.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Mysteries, Chapter 4, sections 19–21, with its Trinitarian confession, burial and resurrection imagery, Naaman’s washing, and assurance that the waters are not empty.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock; steady, weighty build; declarative and reverent tone

# Track 3: The Oil of Strength

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/the-oil-of-strength/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

You rose from out the waters,

and you came before the throne—

not in weakness, not in silence,

but as one the Lord has known.

Then the oil upon your forehead

spoke a promise, clear and sure:

you are marked for life and courage,

you are chosen and secure.

[Pre-Chorus]

Like the oil on Aaron’s beard,

flowing down with holy fire,

grace was poured upon your calling,

lifting heart and soul much higher.

[Chorus]

This is the oil of strength,

the sign upon your head.

You are crowned with living mercy,

with the life the Spirit said.

This is the oil of strength,

you are sealed and set apart—

made a royal priest forever,

with His name upon your heart.

[Verse 2]

Eyes that see must lead the body,

wisdom rises from the head—

so the blessing finds its purpose

where the Spirit’s light is spread.

Not for rest, but for the journey,

not for ease, but faithful stand—

every soul anointed now

for the work of God’s own hand.

[Pre-Chorus]

Drawn by love that calls your name,

drawn by fragrance from the King,

every heart renewed in courage

feels the strength this oil brings.

[Chorus]

This is the oil of strength,

the sign upon your head.

You are crowned with living mercy,

with the life the Spirit said.

This is the oil of strength,

you are sealed and set apart—

made a royal priest forever,

with His name upon your heart.

[Bridge]

“Draw us after You,” we answered,

running in Your risen light—

breathing in the scent of life

that turns the darkness into sight.

What was poured is not forgotten,

what was given will remain—

strength to stand and strength to serve

in the glory of His name.

[Final Chorus]

This is the oil of strength,

not a memory, not a sign—

but a living gift of power,

grace that claims this life as mine.

This is the oil of strength,

you are armed with holy fire

## Song meaning

“The Oil of Strength” follows the newly baptized from the font into anointing and vocation. In On the Mysteries, Saint Ambrose connects oil on the head with Aaron, the fragrance of the Song of Songs, the wisdom symbolized by the head, and the calling of the baptized into a spiritual kingdom and priesthood. Those images appear in the flowing oil, the King’s fragrance, “Draw us after You,” and the call to run in resurrection light. The title and language of courage interpret the anointing as strength for faithful service. Ambrose’s passage speaks of the head rather than specifically the forehead, while the song’s sealing and spiritual-power language also draws on his later teaching about the spiritual seal and the Spirit’s gifts. The song intentionally brings those related moments together. Its strength is not domination or self-confidence. It is grace becoming endurance: strength to resist, serve, and live out the royal and priestly calling received after baptism.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Mysteries, Chapter 6, sections 29–30, on Aaron’s oil, resurrection’s fragrance, wisdom, and royal priesthood, with spiritual-seal imagery from Chapter 7.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock; brighter tempo; confident, anthemic, forward-driving

# Track 4: The Bread of Angels

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/the-bread-of-angels/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

I held it in my hands, so ordinary

A common loaf beneath the candlelight

But heaven leans in close when the words are spoken

And the earth remembers why it has a voice

[Pre-Chorus]

Not my words—no, not my breath

A higher Word that wakes the dust

The same command that carved out oceans

Now turns the simple into trust

[Chorus]

Before the Word, it’s bread in my sight

After the Word, it’s holy life

He spoke the stars, He spoke the seas

He speaks this gift inside of me

No fear of blood, no shock of night

But ransom hidden, blazing bright

The Bread of Angels—heaven’s sign

The living Body, mine to find

[Verse 2]

He said, “Receive,” and what He says becomes it

A promise stronger than my doubt can be

If all creation rose when He commanded

Then let my heart rise up and learn to see

[Pre-Chorus 2]

Not my reason—no, not my proof

But faithful Witness, sure and true

If He declares it, I will answer

Amen—so let it carry through

[Chorus]

Before the Word, it’s bread in my sight

After the Word, it’s holy life

He spoke the stars, He spoke the seas

He speaks this gift inside of me

No fear of blood, no shock of night

But ransom hidden, blazing bright

The Bread of Angels—heaven’s sign

The living Body, mine to find

[Bridge]

I was old—an empty name

A tired creation bent in shame

But when He speaks, He makes me new

A new creation breaking through

The altar glows, the table stands

The covenant in open hands

And in that Word the world is changed—

And I am changed

[Final Chorus]

Before the Word, it’s bread in my sight

After the Word, it’s holy life

He spoke the stars, He spoke the seas

He speaks this gift inside of me

No fear of blood, no shock of night

But ransom hidden, blazing bright

The Bread of Angels—heaven’s sign

The living Body, mine to find

[Outro]

Amen… amen…

The Word has spoken—so I live

Amen… amen…

The Bread of Angels… I receive

## Song meaning

“The Bread of Angels” asks the listener to look beyond appearances and trust the effective word of Christ. In On the Sacraments, Saint Ambrose begins with bread and wine, recalls Melchizedek’s offering, and argues that Christ’s words accomplish the sacrament. The Word that created all things can change what already exists. The chorus therefore moves from “bread in my sight” to holy life. Its hidden ransom and absence of horror reflect Ambrose’s teaching that the grace of Christ’s blood is received beneath a sacramental appearance. The repeated “Amen” echoes his instruction that the spoken answer—“it is true”—must also be held inwardly. “Bread of Angels” is a scriptural and traditional title rather than the principal phrase of these passages, but it suits Ambrose’s comparison of manna with Christ’s greater gift. The glowing altar is imaginative scenery. The central argument remains Ambrose’s: Christ’s creative Word changes the gift and calls its receiver into new creation.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Sacraments, Book 4, Chapters 3–5, especially Melchizedek, Christ’s consecrating Word, hidden redemption, the communicant’s “Amen,” and the comparison with manna.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock, bright countertenor male vocals

# Track 5: New Creation

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/new-creation-daily-bread/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

I came worn thin by borrowed names

A fragile heart, a debt of shame

Born with riches, lost the gold

Trading glory for the cold

[Pre-Chorus]

But He did not leave me there

He met me at the font and flame

Where dying ends the reign of death

And rising calls me by a Name

[Chorus]

I was old—but now I’m new

A new creation breaking through

What was dust now learns to breathe

What was bound is finally free

Daily Bread, eternal flame

He feeds my life, He seals my name

I was old—but now I’m new

New creation—made in You

[Verse 2]

Not once a year, not distant light

But living fire, here tonight

If I still fall, He still remains

The medicine for all my pain

[Pre-Chorus 2]

Each time I come with empty hands

Each time His mercy meets my need

Not memory alone, but life

Renewed in what I now receive

[Chorus]

I was old—but now I’m new

A new creation breaking through

What was dust now learns to breathe

What was bound is finally free

Daily Bread, eternal flame

He feeds my life, He seals my name

I was old—but now I’m new

New creation—made in You

[Bridge]

If I am wounded, here is cure

If I am weak, this makes me sure

If I still stumble in the night

This Bread restores my strength to fight

He said “Today”—and still He says

“My mercy does not age or fade”

If Christ is risen every day

Then every day… I rise again

[Final Chorus]

I was old—but now I’m new

A new creation breaking through

What was dust now learns to breathe

What was bound is finally free

Daily Bread, eternal flame

He feeds my life, He seals my name

I was old—but now I’m new

New creation—made in You

[Outro]

Today He feeds me—today I live

Today I rise in what I receive

Today… today…

New creation—Amen

## Song meaning

“New Creation (Daily Bread)” joins Saint Ambrose’s teaching about Eucharistic transformation with his explanation of daily bread. In On the Sacraments, Ambrose tells the newly initiated that they were an old creation but have begun to be a new creation. He later interprets “Give us this day our daily bread” as heavenly, life-giving food and calls the sacrament medicine for the wound of sin. The song turns those teachings into movement from a worn and indebted life toward renewal nourished day by day. “Font and flame” poetically connects baptismal rebirth with continuing Eucharistic life, while “medicine for all my pain” broadens Ambrose’s image of humanity healed from sin. The bridge’s repeated “Today” comes from his striking claim that when Christ is today for the believer, Christ rises for that person daily. This is not a repeated historical resurrection. It expresses continuing participation in Christ’s risen life: new creation received as grace and sustained through the Bread that does not fade.

## Song inspiration

# Track 6: Our Father

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/our-father/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Out of the water, out of the night,

I rise with a borrowed breath.

No longer bound to the dust below,

No longer marked by death.

I speak a name I could not claim

Before the light broke through—

Not distant throne, not hidden fire,

But Father calling me too.

[Pre-Chorus]

Not fear, not silence,

Not a stranger’s door—

I stand as one reborn.

[Chorus]

Our Father,

High above, yet nearer than my breath.

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

Here in this fragile flesh.

Give us the bread that does not fade,

Forgive what we became—

Lead us through the trial of night,

Deliver us by name.

[Verse 2]

Daily hunger, daily need,

But not for dust alone—

A living bread, a deeper fire,

A life no grave has known.

I learned this prayer beside the font,

Where mercy learned my face,

Where every debt was washed away

By undeserved grace.

[Pre-Chorus]

I do not ask as one outside,

But as a child who knows—

[Chorus]

Our Father,

High above, yet nearer than my breath.

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

Here in this fragile flesh.

Give us the bread that does not fade,

Forgive what we became—

Lead us through the trial of night,

Deliver us by name.

[Bridge]

Not from stone, but from the table,

Not from fear, but from the Son—

Every word a mark of promise:

You have made us one.

If You clothe the fields with glory,

If You hear the smallest cry,

How much more will You sustain us

As we walk this newborn life?

[Final Chorus]

Our Father,

Let Your mercy shape our days.

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

In love that never strays.

We are not lost, we are not alone,

We speak because we’re known—

Our Father,

Hear the voice of those

You’ve claimed as Your own.

[Outro]

Our Father…

## Song meaning

“Our Father” places the Lord’s Prayer in the voice of someone newly emerged from baptism. In On the Sacraments, Saint Ambrose tells the newly initiated that after receiving Christ’s grace and forgiveness, they may raise their eyes and call God Father. This does not claim Christ’s unique sonship: Christ is Son by nature, while believers become children together by grace. The song expresses that teaching through “out of the water,” “I stand as one reborn,” and “I do not ask as one outside.” Its chorus recasts the prayer in baptismal language: God’s kingdom and will entering fragile human life, daily bread sustaining it, debts forgiven, and the believer guarded through trial. Ambrose interprets daily or “supersubstantial” bread as Eucharistic food for eternal life, explaining the song’s table imagery. “Mercy learned my face” personifies grace personally received. The fields and smallest cry come from Christ’s wider teaching in Matthew 6, joining Ambrose’s catechesis to the Gospel setting of the prayer.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Sacraments, Book 5, Chapter 4, sections 18–29, especially baptismal adoption, the communal “Our Father,” daily Eucharistic bread, forgiven debts, and deliverance from trial.

# Track 7: The Red Sea

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/the-red-sea/

## Lyrics

[VERSE 1]

Night fell hard on our escape

Iron thunder at our heels

Water towering like a gate

Panic was the only thing we’d feel

We cried out—shaking, out of breath

Still tasting Egypt in our lungs

Then Moses raised the staff of God

And the deep learned a new song

[PRE-CHORUS]

Cloud ahead, fire behind

You were with us in the fear

Not by blade and not by might—

By Your promise drawing near

[CHORUS]

Through the sea, You carried me

Out of chains, into the free

What was shadow now is true

What was figure now is new

Down I go—old life erased

Up I rise—remade by grace

Through the sea, at break of dawn

I am Yours, and fear is gone

[VERSE 2]

Walls of water left and right

A narrow road Your hand designed

Every step became a prayer

Every heartbeat learned to trust Your light

The cloud came close and covered us

The fire burned our doubt away

Where it looked like we would die

You made a way—You made a way

[PRE-CHORUS]

Not a tale that faded out

Not a wonder trapped in time

This same crossing marks us still

When we meet the water’s line

[CHORUS]

Through the sea, You carried me

Out of chains, into the free

What was shadow now is true

What was figure now is new

Down I go—old life erased

Up I rise—remade by grace

Through the sea, at break of dawn

I am Yours, and fear is gone

[BRIDGE]

The sea didn’t take the people—

It took the ones who hunted us

The wave that judged the tyrant’s pride

Became our rescue, bloodless, just

Water and Spirit—cover me

Make my ending be my start

I die there with the old demand

I rise here with a living heart

[FINAL CHORUS]

Through the sea, You carried me

Out of death, into the free

Not to drown beneath the night

But to rise into the light

Down I go—old life erased

Up I rise—remade by grace

Through the sea, at break of dawn

I am Yours, and fear is gone

[OUTRO]

You still speak—seas open wide

Freedom’s born on the other side

## Song meaning

“The Red Sea” hears Israel’s escape from Egypt as a pattern of baptism. In On the Sacraments, Saint Ambrose recalls the trapped Hebrews, armed Egyptians, Moses’ staff, the divided sea, the pillar of light, and the cloud. He calls the crossing a figure whose truth is revealed in Christian baptism: water and the Spirit carry a person from slavery toward freedom. The song turns that teaching into a nighttime drama of pursuit, panic, towering water, and a road opened by God. The drowning pursuers, walls of water, and fear at the shoreline come directly from Exodus and are expanded for cinematic movement. “What was shadow now is true” captures Ambrose’s interpretation. “Old life erased” is poetic baptismal language, not the destruction of personal identity. What dies is slavery to sin; what rises is the person remade by grace. The sea that looked like certain death becomes the passage through which freedom is born.

# Track 8: The Jordan Opens

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/the-jordan-opens/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

I came with dust on my hands

With old names on my skin

Looking for a river deep enough

To drown what I’ve been

I thought the cure was farther off

Some brighter foreign stream

But mercy waits in humble water

Like waking from a dream

[Pre-Chorus]

Not every water heals the heart

Not every wave makes clean

But grace can take a common thing

And make it more than seen

[Chorus]

Open, Jordan—open wide

Let the old life pass inside

Not just element, not just rain

But mercy spoken into name

Down I go, and up I rise

Newborn fire behind my eyes

When the river meets the Word

The Jordan opens

[Verse 2]

Naaman walked in wounded pride

“Is this the whole of it?”

Seven steps into ordinary

To unmake the counterfeit

And I know that voice in me

That bargains, doubts, delays

But healing isn’t in the distance

It’s in obedience’s blaze

[Pre-Chorus]

Not every water carries light

Not every plunge is peace

But when the Christ steps into it

The chains begin to cease

[Chorus]

Open, Jordan—open wide

Let the old life pass inside

Not just element, not just rain

But mercy spoken into name

Down I go, and up I rise

Newborn fire behind my eyes

When the river meets the Word

The Jordan opens

[Bridge]

He did not need the washing

Yet He entered for my sake

First into the flowing darkness

So the waters wake

Then the Dove, a sign of gentleness

Descending without fear

And the Father’s pleasure thundered

Love made crystal clear

Trinitas in one bright moment—

Light within the flood

He sanctifies the river

And calls my pulse His own blood

[Final Chorus]

Open, Jordan—open wide

Let the old life pass inside

Not just element, not just rain

But mercy spoken into name

Down I go, and up I rise

Newborn fire behind my eyes

When the river meets the Word

The Jordan opens

When the river meets the Word

The Jordan opens

[Outro]

Open… open… open…

## Song meaning

“The Jordan Opens” brings together Naaman’s healing and Christ’s baptism to show how ordinary water becomes a meeting place with grace. In On the Sacraments, Saint Ambrose describes Naaman’s doubt, his obedience in the Jordan, and the difference between water as an element and water consecrated by divine action. The song recognizes Naaman’s resistance in every heart that bargains, delays, or expects a more impressive cure. Its “seven steps” poetically compress his seven washings into a movement of humble obedience. The second half turns to Christ, who entered not because He needed cleansing, but for humanity and to sanctify the waters. The dove, the Father’s voice, and the Son in the river reveal the Trinity acting together. “Newborn fire” and the opening Jordan are imaginative expressions of inward renewal. The point is not that water possesses power by itself, but that a common element becomes sacramental when it meets God’s Word and promise.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Sacraments, Book 1, Chapter 5, sections 13–19, especially Naaman, ordinary water and consecrated water, Christ’s baptism, the dove, and the Father’s voice.

[SEVENFOLD CHANT — 3 (massive, final)]

Wisdom.

Understanding.

Counsel.

Strength.

Knowledge.

Piety.

Holy Fear.

[FINAL TAG — minimal]

Remember the seal.

Keep what you received.

## Song meaning

“Signaculum (Sevenfold Gift)” is built like a lesson meant to be remembered. In On the Mysteries, Saint Ambrose tells the newly initiated that after the font comes the spiritual seal. He names the Spirit’s seven gifts—wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety, and holy fear—and urges the baptized person to keep what has been received. The song preserves that directness through short instructions and a sevenfold chant rather than conventional narrative. “The Father marked me, the Son confirmed me, the Spirit lives within” follows Ambrose’s Trinitarian explanation of the seal and the Spirit’s pledge in the heart. Repetition serves catechesis: the words enter memory so that the gift is not treated as a passing emotion. “Guard the gift” does not mean grace survives only through human effort. It means living faithfully within what God has given. The track pauses the album’s story and lets this new identity be spoken, counted, and remembered.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Mysteries, Chapter 7, section 42, especially the spiritual seal, the Spirit’s seven gifts, the Trinitarian pledge, and the command to keep what was received.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock; real jammer; mid-tempo anthem groove; pulsing bass; big gated drums in chorus; shimmering pads + lead guitar; bright countertenor male vocals minimal and rhythmic; chant refrains over long instrumental sections

# Track 10: The Dove Descends

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/the-dove-descends/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Not counted with the “all things” that serve,

Not numbered among the works of hands—

He moves above the waters still,

Unmeasured, free, and uncommanded.

Not sent like tools from place to place,

Yet present where the faithful are—

A breath that cannot be confined,

A fire that leaves the heart a star.

[Pre-Chorus]

The world can’t see Him,

The world can’t name Him,

But grace arrives like dawn.

[Chorus]

O Dove descending—Seal of the living God,

Mark of the promise, burn away the fog.

Write Your light within me, where no thief can tread,

Make my heart Your temple—wake what looked like dead.

O Spirit, holy Freedom—stay, and do not cease:

Where You are, there is liberty,

Where You are, there is peace.

[Verse 2]

Not merely water on the skin,

But hidden signing in the soul—

A sacred imprint in the chest,

A pledge that makes the shattered whole.

The finger of the living God

Unbinds the serpent’s ancient claim;

The darkness yields, the idols fall,

And fear forgets its former name.

[Pre-Chorus]

Not lesser, not divided,

One working with the Father’s will—

One glory, undiminished,

One love that sanctifies us still.

[Bridge]

Not a servant among “all,”

But over all—yet near to me;

Not broken into pieces,

Yet poured out endlessly.

Not borrowed fire, not passing wind—

You search the depths, You know what’s true;

And what You sanctify endures:

A new creation—made in You.

[Final Chorus]

O Dove descending—Seal of the living God,

Sign of adoption, calling me “beloved.”

Keep Your mark upon me, till the final day,

Let my life confess You—light that will not fade.

O Spirit, holy Freedom—stay, and do not cease:

Where You are, there is liberty,

Where You are, there is peace.

## Song meaning

“The Dove Descends” gathers several arguments from Saint Ambrose’s On the Holy Spirit into one confession of the Spirit’s divinity and nearness. Ambrose insists that the Spirit is not numbered among created “all things,” cannot be confined, searches God’s depths, sanctifies, and brings liberty. Elsewhere he connects the Spirit with the dove, finger of God, temple of the heart, spiritual seal, and inward pledge. The song intentionally combines those passages rather than following one chapter. Its chorus turns doctrine into prayer: the uncreated Spirit is asked to mark, awaken, free, and dwell within the believer. “Burn away the fog” and “wake what looked like dead” are modern images for illumination and renewal. The dove expresses gentleness, not weakness; the same Spirit who descends peacefully breaks the claim of fear and idolatry. The track moves from theological distinction—who the Spirit is—to personal transformation—what His presence means within a human heart.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Holy Spirit, especially Books 1–3 on the Spirit’s divinity, freedom, dove, seal, temple, pledge, sanctifying presence, and knowledge of God’s depths.

# Track 11: Guard the Door

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/guard-the-door/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Night leans close to the chamber wall

A hand is near but I will not give all

Not every voice may cross this place

Not every word may wear His face

I learned to keep the threshold still

To wait for more than passing thrill

A quieter fire, a deeper sound

The kind that turns the whole heart round

[Pre-Chorus]

Guard the window

Guard the flame

Let no stranger

Rename the Name

[Chorus]

Guard the door

Keep the chamber for the Word

Closed to the noise

But open when He’s heard

Sealed with mercy

Marked by holy fire

Guard the door

Keep the hidden heart higher

[Verse 2]

Hortus conclusus, hidden and bright

A wellspring covered from the wasting night

Not locked by fear, not sealed by pride

But kept for Christ to dwell inside

Wash the feet and guard the way

Do not let the old dust stay

What has been opened by His grace

Let nothing common now deface

[Pre-Chorus]

Guard the speaking

Guard the eyes

Keep them clear

For truer light

[Chorus]

Guard the door

Keep the chamber for the Word

Closed to the noise

But open when He’s heard

Sealed with mercy

Marked by holy fire

Guard the door

Keep the hidden heart higher

[Bridge]

When He knocks

Rise up quickly

When He calls

Do not delay

He does not love

The careless slumber

He loves the soul

That makes Him stay

Myrrh will fall from opened hands

Grace will breathe through guarded lands

And what was once a restless room

Becomes a living place for Him

[Final Chorus]

Guard the door

Keep the chamber for the Word

Closed to the noise

But open when He’s heard

Sealed with mercy

Marked by holy fire

Guard the door

Keep the hidden heart higher

[Outro]

Be still

Be sealed

Be ready

For the Word

## Song meaning

“Guard the Door” turns Saint Ambrose’s imagery of consecrated virginity into a wider meditation on the soul made ready for Christ. In On Virginity, Ambrose speaks of the interior chamber, window of the mind, door of the mouth, enclosed garden, and sealed fountain. These images call for watchfulness over sight, speech, desire, and the hidden life. The song preserves that architecture while applying it to every listener who wants the Word to dwell within. The door is not closed from fear, pride, or suspicion. It is closed to noise and false voices, yet opened quickly when Christ knocks. “Wash the feet and guard the way” draws from Ambrose’s language of cleansing away new dust after the first washing. The guarded chamber is therefore not sterile isolation. It becomes a living place of welcome, prayer, and grace. Myrrh, flame, window, garden, and fountain express one choice: to keep the heart attentive enough to recognize the true Guest when He comes.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On Virginity, especially Chapters 10–13, on the interior chamber, guarded door and window, enclosed garden, sealed fountain, cleansed feet, and the Word who knocks.

## Song style

# Track 12: Choose the Kingdom

Song page: https://augustinusvox.com/song/choose-the-kingdom/

## Lyrics

[Verse 1]

I remember the questions in the quiet light

I remember my voice in the holy night

Not in the shadows, not in the grave

Written among the living, bold and brave

I said “no” to the old chains clinging to my name

I said “no” to the glitter that burns like flame

[Pre-Chorus]

I won’t bargain with the dark

I won’t wear its borrowed crown

I’m not drifting anymore

I’m turning now

[Chorus]

I choose the Kingdom

I choose the King

I turn to the sunrise

I let the new life begin

I renounce the lie

I release the dream that destroys

I choose the Kingdom

With my mouth, with my heart, with my voice

[Verse 2]

Water on my skin, but more than water there

Grace in the unseen, fire in the air

Not just a symbol, not just a sign

A living work that rewrites my time

The old self sinking, the new self raised

A clean yes spoken, and heaven praised

[Pre-Chorus]

I won’t look back to Egypt

I won’t fear the waves

The path is open through the deep

And I am saved

[Chorus]

I choose the Kingdom

I choose the King

I turn to the sunrise

I let the new life begin

I renounce the lie

I release the dream that destroys

I choose the Kingdom

With my mouth, with my heart, with my voice

[Bridge]

Seal me with wisdom

Teach me to see

Understanding

Wake up in me

Counsel and strength now

Steadying me

Knowledge and piety

Rooted in me

Holy fear, guard me—

Keep me in awe

Help me preserve

What I received in Your law

Set Your seal on my heart

Like a fire that can’t be drowned

No flood can silence love

No river takes it down

[Final Chorus]

I choose the Kingdom

I choose the King

I turn to the sunrise

I let the new life begin

I renounce the lie

I release the dream that destroys

I choose the Kingdom

With my mouth, with my heart, with my voice

[Outro]

I’m turned to the morning

I’m done with the night

I choose the Kingdom

And I will keep the light

## Song meaning

“Choose the Kingdom” closes the album by gathering its baptismal images into a single act of allegiance. In On the Mysteries, Saint Ambrose recalls the questions answered, the renunciation of the devil and the world, and the turn toward the east because turning from darkness means turning toward Christ. The song transforms that movement into its refrain: “I choose the Kingdom, I choose the King.” It also revisits the Red Sea, burial and rising, the spiritual seal, and the Spirit’s seven gifts. These come from several parts of Ambrose’s sacramental teaching, making the track an intentional album summary rather than an adaptation of only two sections. “Set Your seal on my heart” and love that cannot be drowned draw from Ambrose’s use of the Song of Songs. The choice is not self-salvation through willpower. It is the continuing human response to grace already received: renouncing the old claim, turning toward Christ, guarding the gift, and living within the kingdom that has opened.

## Song inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Mysteries, especially Chapters 2–4 and 7, on renunciation, turning east toward Christ, baptismal burial and rising, the spiritual seal, seven gifts, and undrownable love.

## Song style

atmospheric synths, classic 1980s rock, power ballad, arena rock, bright countertenor male vocals; steady mid-tempo build; shimmering pads; big gated drums; soaring chorus; anthemic guitars; emotional, victorious finale energy
