Song Meaning
“O Satyrus, My Brother” closes the album as direct address: grief speaking to the beloved by name. Ambrose repeatedly turns toward Satyrus in On the Death of Satyrus, calling him brother, companion, helper, and the one with whom his life had been almost indivisible. He says Satyrus remains with him in affection, appears in memory, and is not severed from him by death or time. Near the end, Ambrose asks Satyrus to prepare a shared dwelling and says that, since Satyrus cannot return, he will go to him. This final song returns to the simplest wound: my brother is gone. Yet the farewell is temporary because Christ has risen. The track gathers the album into one hope: the brother mourned in tears will be met again in light.
