Song Meaning
“Creator of All” is based on Ambrose’s Deus creator omnium, an evening hymn offered as daylight fades and the world enters the rest of night. God is praised as the Creator and ruler of all things, the One who clothes the day with light and gives the night as a gracious remedy for weariness, labor, and sorrow. The hymn does not treat sleep as spiritual absence. Instead, it asks that faith remain awake even when the body rests, so that the darkness of night may shine through trust in God. Ambrose prays that the mind will not sleep in sin, that the heart will dream of God, and that fear and temptation will not disturb those who rest. The song preserves this movement from completed labor into peaceful dependence.
