Song Meaning
“Infinite Numbers” comes from Augustine’s appeal to the unchanging truths of number, geometry, and the liberal arts. A circle’s rational form and the relations between numbers are discovered by the mind, not invented into existence by it. Augustine argues that when people reason correctly, they uncover truths already present in the hidden depths of the soul, even if ignorance or forgetfulness had concealed them. The song presents these truths as an endless sea stretching beyond one life or generation. We do not own them, and their existence does not depend upon our attention. They remain when we forget them and wait to be found again.
