Song Meaning
“Mirror and Dream” comes from Augustine’s long meditation on falsity, likeness, images, reflections, dreams, actors, pictures, shadows, and the oar that appears bent in water. In the Soliloquies, false things are not pure nothing. They often imitate the true while failing to be what they appear. A mirror image looks like a face but is not a living person. A dream figure resembles a real man but cannot be grasped. A stage actor may be a false character and still a true actor. This song uses those images to explore how even falsity depends on truth. Shadows, likenesses, and distortions can deceive, but they also reveal that truth is the measure by which they are judged. The track is about learning not to be trapped by appearances, but to let every false reflection point back toward the light it imitates.
