Song Meaning
“Immortality” follows the Soliloquies’ second great concern: whether the soul truly lives and cannot perish. Augustine wants to know whether he is immortal, not because he merely wants endless existence, but because he wants to live in truth. Reason argues from truth, knowledge, and the soul’s participation in what does not perish. If truth abides, and truth is present in the mind, then the mind cannot be treated as a thing simply destroyed by bodily death. The song turns that difficult argument into a rock anthem of hope.
