Song Meaning
"Eternal Harmony" gathers the album's rhythms, measures, pauses, and proportions into a vision of the unchanging beauty toward which they point. Inspired especially by Book VI of Saint Augustine's On Music, the song looks back and recognizes that every earlier line has been leading beyond temporal sound. Augustine argues that equality in bodily things is never perfectly secure. Sounds disappear, memories weaken, and the senses may accept two intervals as equal even when one is slightly longer than the other. Yet the soul continues to seek and judge by a standard of equality that does not pass away. The song calls this "eternal harmony": the divine unity, beauty, and order imitated by the changing patterns of creation. Augustine describes the movements of the heavens, the cycles of days and years, and the succession of earthly things as joining a vast song of the universe. Human beings rarely see the whole pattern. We are like a figure standing in one corner of a great building, a soldier unable to view the whole army, or a syllable unable to hear the completed poem of which it is only one passing part. The track responds with trust that every true beauty has its place within God's greater order. Love does not replace order; divine love is the source that makes created order good, meaningful, and beautiful.
