"Beyond the Beat" completes the journey Saint Augustine intended On Music to make. The first five books remain close to syllables, poetic feet, meters, verses, and temporal measurement. At the beginning of Book VI, Augustine explains that this technical road was meant to lead the mind gradually away from attachment to bodily sensation and toward spiritual truth and God.
