Song Meaning
"Threefold Descent" imagines the central action of baptism through the ancient Christian pattern of immersion in the name of the Trinity. Ambrose describes the descent into the water, the profession of faith, and the threefold sacramental action as participation in Christ's death and resurrection. The music follows that movement: a first fall into darkness, a second immersion held beneath shimmering tension, and a final rising into breath and light. Augustine says simply that he, Adeodatus, and Alypius were baptized and that concern over their past life fled from them. This track expands that brief recollection into an inward drama. The water signifies both an ending and a beginning. The old life is surrendered, but the person is not erased. He rises changed, receiving life as gift rather than possession.
