Song Meaning
“After the Water (Instrumental)” opens in the stillness following Augustine’s baptism at Milan during Easter 387. In Confessions Book 9, baptism is not simply the end of an intellectual struggle. Augustine’s former anxiety over his past life falls away, and the Church’s hymns, prayer, and sacramental life fill him with a new sweetness. This meditation imagines the first quiet breaths after that passage through the water. Shimmering textures suggest cleansing and illumination, while the gradual movement forward allows new life to appear as a beginning rather than a completed destination. Africa remains ahead, and Augustine still has grief and change to encounter, but he no longer travels as the same person who once fled from truth. The track’s restraint keeps baptism from becoming spectacle. Grace is heard as a settled clarity: the soul has stepped from the font, received a new identity, and now begins learning how to walk within it.
Song Inspiration
Augustine’s Confessions Book 9, chapters 6–7, on his baptism at Milan, the release of former anxiety, and the tears, sweetness, and devotion awakened by the Church’s hymns.

We joined him to ourselves as our equal in your grace, to be educated in your discipline; and we were baptized, and anxiety over our past life fled from us.
During those days I could not be sated with marvelous sweetness as I considered the depth of your counsel concerning the salvation of the human race. How much I wept during your hymns and songs, sharply moved by the voices of your Church sounding sweetly!
