Song Meaning
“The Port of Rome (Instrumental)” brings the travelers to Ostia Tiberina, where they wait to cross the sea to Africa. The port is both an arrival and an interval. Milan lies behind them, home appears close enough to imagine, yet the voyage has not begun. Low, spacious sounds evoke water, distance, and the suspended attention of people living between land and sea. These atmospheric details interpret the setting rather than reproduce a descriptive passage from Augustine. Their deeper purpose is to make waiting audible. The company has moved with confidence toward a destination, but providence will not allow the planned journey to unfold on their timetable. Ostia becomes a threshold where earthly travel pauses and a greater ascent briefly opens for Augustine and Monica. The music therefore resists easy resolution. Hope remains, but it is held within stillness, anticipation, and the quiet vulnerability of lives that cannot yet see what this delay will contain.
Song Inspiration
Augustine’s Confessions Book 9, chapter 10, at Ostia Tiberina where the company pauses before sailing for Africa and waits between the completed road and the unbegun sea voyage.

It came about, as I believe, through your hidden ways of arranging things, that she and I stood alone, leaning against a certain window from which we looked out upon the garden inside the house that sheltered us, there at Ostia on the Tiber, where, removed from the crowds after the labor of a long journey, we were restoring ourselves for the sea voyage.
We sought which place might hold us most usefully as we served you and returned together to Africa.
