Song Meaning

“Before the Tears (Instrumental)” inhabits the brief, fragile interval between Monica’s peaceful declaration at the Ostia window and the grief that follows her final illness. The music does not yet become the lament Augustine will later articulate. Instead, it attends to the changing atmosphere around the household: strength receding, conversation quieting, and a planned voyage beginning to lose its familiar shape. Sparse piano and restrained guitar hold emotion beneath the surface, reflecting Augustine’s own effort not to let grief break out in uncontrolled display. This restraint is not indifference. Confessions Book 9 reveals how deeply the loss wounds him and how carefully he later examines his tears before God. The track pauses just before that examination begins. It allows foreknowledge, tenderness, helplessness, and silence to gather without resolving them, creating a threshold between the fulfilled hopes of Monica’s life and the mourning through which Augustine must now pass.

Song Inspiration

Augustine’s Confessions Book 9, chapters 11–12, on Monica’s final illness and the restrained household sorrow before Augustine fully reflects upon his grief and tears before God.

Meanwhile, scarcely five days later, or not much more, she lay down with a fever. While she was ill, on a certain day she suffered a loss of consciousness and for a little while was withdrawn from those present.

I closed her eyes, and an immense sorrow gathered into my heart and overflowed into tears; but at the same time, under the violent command of my mind, my eyes drew their fountain back until it was dry, and in such a struggle I suffered greatly.
