Song Meaning
“After the Night” is based on Ambrose’s Somno refectis artubus, a morning hymn sung after the body has been refreshed by sleep. The believer rises from bed and asks the Father to be present as the new day begins. Ambrose prays that the tongue’s first words will praise God, that the mind’s first desire will reach toward Him, and that every later action will have God as its beginning. Morning light becomes a symbol of cleansing and renewal: darkness gives way to brightness, and the sins or weaknesses associated with the night are asked to disappear before the gift of dawn. The song develops this into the language of grace awakening and mercy burning within a renewed heart. Its movement from sleep to song reflects the desire to dedicate the entire day to God before other concerns take possession of it. The hymn ends in praise of the Father, the equal Son, and the Holy Spirit reigning forever.
