Song
Built to Seek
From the album: On the Happy Life
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
From the cradle to the grave
We’re chasing something we can’t name
In every win, in every ache
In every song the heartbreak makes
We reach for more — we always do
It’s like the empty points to You
[Pre-Chorus]
This restless pulse, this open sky
Wasn’t made to just get by
[Chorus]
We were built to seek — not just survive
There’s fire in the soul that keeps it alive
We long for joy, we crave the real
We’re shaped to need what we can’t steal
The ache ain’t wrong — it’s just too deep
We were built to seek
We were built to seek
[Verse 2]
We chase the wind in every age
We write our hopes on every page
But pleasure fades, and power slips
And none of it can seal the lips
When silence falls, and lights go down
The soul still cries without a sound
[Pre-Chorus]
But maybe longing is a sign
That joy’s not lost — just not yet mine
[Chorus]
We were built to seek — not just survive
There’s fire in the soul that keeps it alive
We long for joy, we crave the real
We’re shaped to need what we can’t steal
The ache ain’t wrong — it’s just too deep
We were built to seek
[Bridge – soft tension, then release]
If there’s no joy, then why the ache?
Why the thirst no drink can break?
[Guitar Solo – urgent and yearning, echoing the tension of desire]
[Final Chorus – soaring, full harmonies]
We were built to seek — that’s what we are
Carved by longing, led by stars
The hunger points, the questions burn
Until we see what won’t unlearn
It’s not a flaw — it’s how we breathe
We were built…
Built to seek
Song Meaning
“Built to Seek” grows out of Augustine’s conviction that the human soul is not made merely to survive, consume, or drift. In On the Happy Life, the conversation keeps returning to the deeper purpose of desire: we want joy, but not every object of desire can give it. The song turns that philosophical point into a personal confession. The ache for something real is not treated as a defect to be numbed, but as a sign that the soul is oriented beyond temporary goods. Augustine’s friends debate riches, need, wisdom, and blessedness, but beneath the argument is a simple human fact: we keep reaching because we are made for truth. This track carries that restless energy with hope. The emptiness does not have the last word. It points beyond itself, toward the good the soul cannot steal, manufacture, or outgrow.
Song Inspiration
Saint Augustine’s On the Happy Life (De beata vita), especially its Cassiciacum dialogue on joy, wisdom, the highest good, and Monica’s closing Trinitarian prayer.
