Song Meaning
“Carried by the Light” translates Augustine’s argument about sustaining divine power into the language of light. In On the Immortality of the Soul, the power that formed the universe does not create it and then withdraw. Because created things do not possess existence entirely from themselves, they continue to be held and formed by the higher incorporeal reality from which they receive being. Augustine then argues that the soul, which gives life and form to the body, cannot be treated as something lower and more perishable than the body it animates. The song expands this into a confession of trust: if the universe is continually upheld by its Maker, the soul is not abandoned to darkness. Its rising language of stars, grace, and divine light gives a Christian voice to Augustine’s philosophical conviction that created life is continuously sustained.
