Lyrics

[Verse 1]

O God, Creator of the skies,

Who set the sun and stars to rise,

You clothe the day in golden light,

And bless the world with peace tonight.

[Pre-Chorus]

The work is done, the shadows fall,

Your mercy holds and heals us all.

[Chorus]

Creator of all, our rest, our stay,

Guard every heart till break of day;

When darkness comes, still let us see—

The night made bright by faith in Thee.

[Verse 2]

You lift the weary, calm the mind,

And leave no wounded soul behind;

Our voices sing, our hearts adore,

The One we need forevermore.

[Pre-Chorus]

Through fading light Your love is near,

Our peace beyond all earthly fear.

[Chorus]

Creator of all, our rest, our stay,

Guard every heart till break of day;

When darkness comes, still let us see—

The night made bright by faith in Thee.

[Bridge]

Let dreams be pure, let tempers sleep,

Let faith its holy vigil keep;

No fear disturb, no shadows bind—

Your light remains within the mind.

[Final Chorus]

Creator of all, our rest, our stay,

Guard every heart till break of day;

When darkness comes, still let us see—

The night made bright by faith in Thee.

[Outro]

O Father, Son, and Spirit One,

Eternal love, Thy will be done.

Song Meaning

“Creator of All” is based on Ambrose’s Deus creator omnium, an evening hymn offered as daylight fades and the world enters the rest of night. God is praised as the Creator and ruler of all things, the One who clothes the day with light and gives the night as a gracious remedy for weariness, labor, and sorrow. The hymn does not treat sleep as spiritual absence. Instead, it asks that faith remain awake even when the body rests, so that the darkness of night may shine through trust in God. Ambrose prays that the mind will not sleep in sin, that the heart will dream of God, and that fear and temptation will not disturb those who rest. The song preserves this movement from completed labor into peaceful dependence. It closes with the Trinitarian prayer of the source: Father, Son, and Spirit are invoked as the one powerful Trinity who sustains those who pray.

Song Inspiration

Inspired by Ambrose’s evening hymn Deus creator omnium, especially its prayer for faithful rest, guarded sleep, and trust in the Trinity as daylight fades.

God, Creator of all things
and Ruler of the heavens, clothing
the day with lovely light
and the night with the grace of sleep,

so that rest may restore our loosened limbs
to the service of labor,
relieve our weary minds,
and unbind our anxious griefs:

now that the day is done,
and as night begins, we offer thanks and prayers;
singing a hymn, we pay our vows,
that you may help us in our guilt.

When the deep darkness of the night
has closed the day,
let faith know no darkness,
and let night shine with faith.
