Song Meaning

“Farewell to Milan (Instrumental)” holds gratitude and ache together as Augustine leaves the city of his conversion and baptism. Milan had been the place of Ambrose’s preaching, Monica’s persistent prayer, the Church’s hymns, Augustine’s tears, and the final surrender of his public ambitions. Departure therefore means more than changing geography. He leaves behind the setting in which his long resistance came to rest, even as he carries its gifts toward Africa. The music’s forward pulse keeps the farewell from becoming nostalgia, while warmer and more sorrowful colors acknowledge the cost of leaving. Augustine is no longer running from responsibility or truth; the road now belongs to a chosen return and a new common life. Yet a faithful beginning still requires release. This instrumental meditation gives that release its own space, honoring Milan not as the destination of Augustine’s story, but as the luminous threshold through which he was prepared to continue.

Song Inspiration

Augustine’s Confessions Book 9 and the departure from Milan after baptism, carrying forward Ambrose’s teaching, the Church’s hymns, Monica’s joy, and Augustine’s newly reordered purpose.

We were together, resolved to live together with a holy purpose. We sought which place might hold us most usefully as we served you and returned together to Africa.

It came about, as I believe, through your hidden ways of arranging things, that she and I stood alone, leaning against a certain window from which we looked out upon the garden inside the house that sheltered us, there at Ostia on the Tiber, where, removed from the crowds after the labor of a long journey, we were restoring ourselves for the sea voyage.
