Lyrics

[Verse 1]

The waves were wild, the sky went black

The ship was gone, no turning back

But deeper still, the fear that stayed—

To die unsealed, to die unmade

[Verse 2]

He found the faithful, sought the sign

A heart that burned for truth divine

No comforts clung, no breath was spared

He chose to die, if God was there

[Pre-Chorus]

Not for safety, not for breath

But for life beyond this death

[Chorus]

He chose the better death

Not chained to fleeting breath

He rose beneath the flood

To cling the cross, to trust the blood

He feared no earthly loss

But missing heaven’s cross

He chose the better death

And now he lives in rest

[Bridge – melodic breakdown, light synth and guitar arpeggio]

Would I have done the same?

Would I have sought the flame?

Or turned to shore, to saving sand

And lost the promise in my hand?

[Guitar Solo – determined, uplifting tone]

[Final Chorus – layered vocals, triumphant instrumentation]

He chose the better death

Not chained to fleeting breath

He rose beneath the flood

To cling the cross, to trust the blood

He feared no earthly loss

But missing heaven’s cross

He chose the better death

And now he lives in rest

Song Meaning

“He Chose the Better Death” draws from Ambrose’s account of Satyrus in a shipwreck. Ambrose says Satyrus did not fear death most, but feared leaving life without the holy mystery of faith. He sought the sacrament from the faithful, bound it in a cloth around his neck, and entered the sea trusting not in wreckage or planks, but in faith. The song turns that scene into a dramatic question: what kind of life is worth saving, and what kind of loss should truly be feared? It does not mean Satyrus sought death for its own sake. It means he valued God, grace, and eternal life above mere survival. The storm becomes a test of desire, and Satyrus appears as one whose hope was stronger than the instinct to preserve breath at any cost.

Song Inspiration

Saint Ambrose’s On the Death of Satyrus, especially where Satyrus, during shipwreck, seeks the mystery of faith and values divine grace above bodily safety.

The vessel in which he was traveling struck a rocky shoal and, pressed by waves on either side, was breaking apart; yet he did not fear death, but feared that he might depart this life devoid of the mystery.

He did not look for a plank broken loose from the ship’s frame upon which he might float and be aided, because he had sought the armor of faith alone.
