Heart and Spirit

Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro – guitars and drums build; synths pulse like a heartbeat]

[Verse 1 – sparse vocals]

Heart and spirit—one fire,

Rising higher, rising higher.

[Instrumental – extended riff section, lead guitar motif answers vocals]

[Chorus – short refrain]

Heart and spirit, never fade—

Love unbroken, unafraid.

[Instrumental – rhythm break, drums and bass drive; solo guitar soars]

[Bridge – whispered/spoken]

When the noise takes hold,

Let truth unfold—

Heart and spirit, stay bold.

[Final Chorus – repeat with full band]

Heart and spirit, never fade—

Love unbroken, unafraid.

[Extended Outro – guitars trade solos, synth arpeggios climb, slow fade to reverb]

Song Meaning

“Heart and Spirit” serves as an intermission within Ambrosian Hymns: a largely instrumental, meditative pause between the album’s fuller songs of proclamation and praise. It draws from Ambrose’s very brief hymn Orabo mente Dominum, in which he resolves to pray with both mind and spirit so that the voice does not sing to God while the inner attention wanders elsewhere. Rather than expanding those few Latin lines into a conventional hymn, the track preserves their compactness through sparse vocals, repeated phrases, and extended instrumental passages. The wording is intentionally modernized, transforming Ambrose’s “mind and spirit” into “heart and spirit” as an image of the whole inner person united in worship. The guitars, drums, and synthesizers carry much of the meditation, while the repeated refrain calls the distracted soul back to attention. As the album’s quiet center, the track asks that voice, thought, desire, and spirit become one movement toward God.

Song Inspiration

Inspired by Ambrose’s brief hymn Orabo mente Dominum, especially the desire to pray with inner attention so voice, heart, mind, and spirit move together toward God.
