Song Meaning
“Hero’s Measure (Hexameter Flame)” celebrates dactylic hexameter, the traditional six-foot meter of Greek and Roman epic and therefore known as heroic verse. The lyrics’ “six steps” are its six metrical feet—not six identical modern beats—while the marching lines, battle cries, thunder, and flame evoke the force of an ancient hero’s song. Augustine takes Virgil’s opening line of the Aeneid as his example and divides it into unequal limbs of five and seven half-feet. He then uncovers their hidden concord: the seven divide into three and four, whose squares total twenty-five, while five squared is also twenty-five. Thus “ordered sound,” “one great rhythm,” and “measure holding over all” express Augustine’s discovery of equality within inequality. In Book 6, Augustine explains why this analysis matters: passing rhythm can lead the mind, step by step, beyond sound toward the immutable equality and order whose source is God. The “hexameter flame” represents heroic verse’s living power, while “truth advancing” recasts heroism as reason’s ascent from temporal music toward abiding truth.

Five multiplied five times completes the same twenty-five. Not without reason, then, have senarii verses become more celebrated and more noble than the others; one can scarcely say how greatly their equality in unequal limbs differs from that of all the rest.
We must agree, then, that certain passing numbers are fashioned from certain abiding numbers.
