Song Meaning
"Hero's Measure" celebrates the ancient heroic hexameter that carried epic poetry across generations. Inspired especially by Book V of Saint Augustine's On Music, the song describes six poetic feet rising like measured steps through stories of battle, journey, courage, and memory. Augustine repeatedly studies the famous opening of Virgil's Aeneid, where the poet announces that he will sing of warfare and of the man who first came from the shores of Troy. Augustine is interested in more than the line's six-foot structure. He divides the heroic verse into two unequal sections and discovers a deeper balance beneath their visible difference. The shorter section contains five half-feet. The longer contains seven, but those seven can be divided into four and three. Five multiplied by itself produces twenty-five, while four multiplied by itself plus three multiplied by itself also produces twenty-five. Augustine sees this hidden equality as part of the line's remarkable strength. The song turns that concealed balance into fire, thunder, and a rhythm powerful enough to survive the passing of centuries. Its "six steps" are six poetic feet, not six identical modern beats.
