Song Meaning
“I Remain I” explores Augustine’s distinction between undergoing change and ceasing to be what something is. The soul can move from foolishness to wisdom, fear to courage, ignorance to knowledge, and sorrow to joy without becoming something other than a soul. Augustine compares this to wax, which may change color, temperature, hardness, or shape while remaining wax. Only a change that destroyed the subject itself would remove everything inseparably belonging to it. The song turns that argument into a declaration of continuing identity through loss, growth, and change. Its point is not that a person remains emotionally untouched or physically unchanged. It is that change does not automatically mean annihilation. Beneath the passing faces and seasons, the soul remains the living subject who experiences them.
