Song
Immortality
From the release: Soliloquies
Lyrics
[Intro – dark guitar riff; heavy toms; tempo ~92 BPM; key D minor]
[Verse 1]
I’ve seen the body break with time,
Ashes fall, the dust resign.
But truths endure, they never die,
Written deep beyond the sky.
[Pre-Chorus]
If the soul can hold what’s true,
It must live forever too.
[Chorus]
Immortality, the fire won’t fade,
Carrying the truth that cannot decay.
Immortality, the spirit will rise,
Living forever in eternal light.
[Verse 2]
Flesh may fail, and voices cease,
But wisdom’s flame will not decrease.
What is eternal marks the soul,
A lasting truth that makes it whole.
[Pre-Chorus]
If the soul can hold what’s true,
It must live forever too.
[Chorus]
Immortality, the fire won’t fade,
Carrying the truth that cannot decay.
Immortality, the spirit will rise,
Living forever in eternal light.
[Bridge – guitar solo; intensity rising]
[Final Chorus – harmonized]
Immortality, the fire won’t fade,
Carrying the truth that cannot decay.
Immortality, the spirit will rise,
Living forever in eternal light.
[Outro – heavy riff slows; echoing synth drone]
Song Meaning
“Immortality” follows the Soliloquies’ second great concern: whether the soul truly lives and cannot perish. Augustine wants to know whether he is immortal, not because he merely wants endless existence, but because he wants to live in truth. Reason argues from truth, knowledge, and the soul’s participation in what does not perish. If truth abides, and truth is present in the mind, then the mind cannot be treated as a thing simply destroyed by bodily death. The song turns that difficult argument into a rock anthem of hope. Flesh may fail and the body may return to dust, but the soul’s relation to eternal truth points beyond decay. This track is not merely about surviving death. It is about the soul carrying the mark of truth, and therefore being made for life beyond the collapse of the body.
Song Inspiration
Saint Augustine’s Soliloquies, especially its search for whether the soul is immortal and its connection between the mind, truth, and life beyond bodily death.
From the Source
Supporting passages from the Augustinus Vox Standard Version (AVSV). Select a source to read it in context.
Now, now believe your reasonings; believe the truth. It cries out both that it dwells within you and that it is immortal, and that by any death of the body its own seat cannot be taken away from it. Turn away from your shadow; return into yourself. There is no destruction for you unless you have forgotten [Col. 0902] that you cannot perish.
Be of good courage. God will be present, as we already perceive, for us who seek him—the God who promises after this body something most blessed and most full of truth, without any falsehood.
