Song
Light of the Father
From the album: Ambrosian Hymns
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
O Light that shares the Father’s light,
The Day that will not fade;
With song we break the night apart,
And rise in love remade.
[Verse 2]
Drive out the shadows of the mind,
Cast out the fears within;
Awaken hearts that drift in sleep,
And cleanse the weight of sin.
[Pre-Chorus]
Let holy fire consume the dark,
Let weary eyes be clear;
Revive the soul that’s grown too still,
And draw Your presence near.
[Chorus]
Light of the Father, shine again,
Through every heart, through every man;
Let every dawn repeat Your call—
You are the Light of all.
[Verse 3]
The powers of night can hold no sway,
Where faith begins to sing;
The trembling heart grows strong in You,
And hope is born again.
[Bridge]
Grant grace to all who trust Your name,
Your mercy never ends;
Let every prayer and every song
Bring healing where it bends.
[Final Chorus]
Light of the Father, shine again,
Through every heart, through every man;
Let every dawn repeat Your call—
You are the Light of all.
[Outro]
O radiant Christ, eternal flame,
Be near us as we stand;
Light of the Father, shine within—
Forever in this land.
Song Meaning
“Light of the Father” adapts Ambrose’s Consors paterni luminis, a compact morning hymn addressed to Christ as the One who shares the Father’s light, the light of light, and the day that never fades. The believers break the night through song and ask Christ to stand near those who call upon Him. The darkness in this hymn is not only physical. Ambrose asks Christ to remove the darkness of the mind, drive away hostile spiritual powers, and overcome the sleepiness and laziness that can smother the soul. The song expands these petitions into a prayer for inward awakening, courage, cleansing, and healing. Each dawn becomes a repetition of Christ’s call to rise from fear, sin, and spiritual numbness. The hymn’s final concern is that the prayer being sung should truly benefit those who offer it. The track therefore presents praise not as empty performance but as an appeal for Christ’s grace to make the singer spiritually alive.
Song Inspiration
Inspired by Ambrose’s Consors paterni luminis, especially Christ as the unfading day who scatters mental darkness, fear, spiritual sleep, and hostile powers.
