Song

More than Chemistry

Lyrics

[Intro – gentle synth pad, clean guitar arpeggio, soft kick drum]

[Verse 1]

They say I’m sparks inside the brain,

Wired circuits, a fleeting flame.

But I have felt what fire can’t show,

A deeper life the body can’t own.

[Pre-Chorus]

Not just signals, not just heat,

There’s something more that makes me complete—

[Chorus]

More than chemistry, more than design,

More than the science that maps my mind.

Life is the soul that no test can see,

I am forever — more than chemistry.

[Verse 2]

Flesh can fail and thoughts may blur,

But something speaks that is stronger, surer.

Not just balance, not just breath,

A living flame that outlasts death.

[Pre-Chorus]

Not equations, not just chance,

But something real that will always stand—

[Chorus]

More than chemistry, more than design,

More than the science that maps my mind.

Life is the soul that no test can see,

I am forever — more than chemistry.

[Bridge – sung]

Every heartbeat fades away,

But my soul will never fray.

I’m more than wires, more than dust,

My soul’s immortal, I’m more than just—

[Chorus]

More than chemistry, more than design,

More than the science that maps my mind.

Life is the soul that no test can see,

I am forever — more than chemistry.

[Solo – soaring guitar lead over chorus chords, bends and high sustained notes]

[Chorus – big final, full band]

More than chemistry, more than design,

More than the science that maps my mind.

Life is the soul that no test can see,

I am forever — more than chemistry.

[Outro – guitar echoes the chorus melody, fading with layered vocals]

Song Meaning

“More than Chemistry” gives modern language to Augustine’s rejection of the idea that the soul is merely a bodily mixture, balance, or harmony. Augustine argues that if the soul were only a condition of the body, like color or physical composition, it could not turn its attention away from the senses and contemplate realities that are unchanging and incorporeal. Yet the mind understands number, truth, and intelligible forms most clearly when it withdraws from bodily distraction. The song expresses this by denying that human life can be completely reduced to signals, heat, circuits, or physical reactions. It does not reject the study of the brain or body. Its claim is that such descriptions do not exhaust the reality of the rational soul. The human person knows truths that matter alone cannot explain.

Song Inspiration

Saint Augustine’s On the Immortality of the Soul, especially its rejection of the soul as merely a bodily mixture or harmony and its appeal to the mind’s knowledge of incorporeal truth.
