Song Meaning
“One Lord, One Christ” is a sung confession of the full divinity of Jesus Christ. Inspired by Saint Ambrose’s On the Faith, the song begins before creation, with the Word eternally with the Father. Christ is described as no lesser light, but as the Father’s perfect radiance and equal flame. This reflects Ambrose’s defense of the Son against teachings that treated him as a creature or as inferior in divine nature. The lyrics hold together Christ’s eternity and his incarnation. The Word through whom all things stand takes a human body and touches the world with human hands, yet his divine glory is not diminished. “No power can divide His throne” expresses the unity of divine majesty, while “the Son who makes the Father known” preserves the personal relationship between Father and Son.
