Song Meaning
“Tears Before the Altar” brings grief into worship. Ambrose says that not every tear is unbelief or weakness. There are tears of nature, tears of love, tears of prayer, and tears like those of the Lord before Lazarus. He also speaks of his sister lying near Satyrus’s tomb, renewing her grief in prayer, and says that weeping in prayer can be a sign of virtue. This song imagines sorrow laid openly before God instead of hidden from Him. The altar becomes the place where speech fails and tears become prayer. The singer kneels with shaking hands and discovers that God does not despise a broken heart. The tears are not wasted. They become offering, intercession, and holy fire: grief transformed by being placed before the Lord.
