Song Meaning
“The Living Law” is not simply a summary of Augustine’s On the Immortality of the Soul. It was inspired by Augustine’s later comments in the Retractions, where he admitted that the treatise’s arguments were extremely compressed and obscure, that several statements had been made too rashly, and that some were written without sufficient grounding in Scripture. The song therefore revisits the album’s philosophical themes through a more mature Christian lens. Immutable truth, reason, and the soul’s spiritual nature remain important, but they are joined to the divine Word, God’s sustaining light, Christ’s teaching not to fear those who can kill the body, and the Christian hope of resurrection. Rather than leaving immortality as a self-contained philosophical argument, the song places the soul’s endurance and the body’s future life within God’s grace and unfailing power. It becomes both an affirmation and a correction: honoring Augustine’s early search while allowing Scripture and his later reflection to bring that search into fuller light.
