Song Meaning

“The Scrutinies” uses only a few words because it represents a moment of exposure rather than a long lesson. “Search me,” “try me,” “cleanse me,” and “free me” express the inward purpose of the scrutinies that formed part of baptismal preparation in the ancient Church of Milan. The Explanation of the Creed for Those Preparing for Baptism refers to completed scrutinies and to purification sought for both body and soul. Saint Ambrose’s baptismal writings also describe the opening of the ears, preparing the candidate to hear what would be asked and to understand the answer that must be given. The lyrics imagine the kind of searching prayer Augustine may have entered during his final preparation for baptism. Hidden shadows and fears are brought into the light, not simply to condemn the candidate, but so that bondage may be broken and a new beginning made possible. The repeated phrase “let the light begin” gives the track its direction. Examination is not the destination. It prepares the soul for illumination.
