Song Meaning
“The Search for Blessedness” expresses the central philosophical movement of Augustine’s third letter to Nebridius. Nebridius has called him blessed, but Augustine hesitates to accept the title because true blessedness belongs to the wise, and he remains conscious of how much he does not know. He asks where the blessed life can actually be found and moves through questions about Epicurean atoms, the size and structure of the world, number, bodily reality, the soul, beauty, intelligence, and immortality. Beneath these many questions lies one conviction: happiness cannot consist merely in bodily pleasure or temporary sensation. The soul is better than the body, intelligence is higher than sense, and true beauty is found more perfectly in intelligible reality than in its visible images. The song presents blessedness as a continuing search for the eternal truth that can satisfy the soul and overcome the fear of death.
