Song
The Trial of Desire
From the album: Soliloquies
Lyrics
[Intro – tense synth pulse; chugging guitar riff; tempo ~94 BPM; key E minor]
[Verse 1]
Pulled by voices, torn apart,
Every hunger floods my heart.
Power calls, and pleasure sings,
But none can crown a soul with wings.
[Pre-Chorus]
Every path I try,
Burns to ash and dies.
[Chorus]
The trial of desire, the fire inside,
Restless flames I cannot hide.
The trial of desire, the battle I fight,
Till truth consumes the night.
[Verse 2]
Fortune fades, and honor falls,
Every shadow hides the call.
Reason whispers, calm and near,
“Turn to light, the path is clear.”
[Pre-Chorus]
Every love I chase,
Leads me to Your face.
[Chorus]
The trial of desire, the fire inside,
Restless flames I cannot hide.
The trial of desire, the battle I fight,
Till truth consumes the night.
[Bridge – instrumental guitar solo; slight tempo lift]
[Final Chorus – soaring vocals]
The trial of desire, the fire inside,
Restless flames I cannot hide.
The trial of desire, the battle I fight,
Till truth consumes the night.
[Outro – descending guitar riff; heartbeat kick drum fading]
Song Meaning
“The Trial of Desire” follows Augustine’s self-examination in the Soliloquies. Reason asks whether he truly loves only God and wisdom, or whether hidden attachments still hold him: wealth, honors, bodily pleasure, food, health, friends, life, fear of pain, and fear of death. Augustine wants to be free, but the dialogue shows how hard it is to know the heart honestly. Some desires seem dead until they are stirred again. This song turns that testing into fire, battle, and restless flame. The point is not that every human love is evil, but that every love must be judged by whether it leads the soul toward wisdom or pulls it back into darkness. The track is about desire under examination: the painful grace of discovering what still rules the heart, and the hope that truth can consume the night.
