Song Meaning

“The Unfinished Voyage (Instrumental)” closes with the company’s intended return to Africa interrupted at Ostia by Monica’s death. The ship has not carried them home, and the narrative cannot end with the uncomplicated fulfillment promised by the southward road. Baptismal joy remains true, but it must now coexist with fresh bereavement. Returning piano ideas recall the album’s earlier beginnings, while oceanic space and an unresolved ending preserve the sense of movement delayed rather than abolished. Augustine will eventually cross the sea, but this track refuses to hurry past the human and spiritual weight of what happened before that crossing. The unfinished voyage is geographical, emotional, and theological: home has drawn near, Monica has reached a different home, and Augustine must continue without the person whose prayer accompanied his whole conversion. The album therefore ends at a real break in the journey, carrying its story forward into remembrance, mourning, and the deeper work of hope.

Song Inspiration

Augustine’s Confessions Book 9, chapters 11–13, where Monica’s illness and death at Ostia interrupt the planned return to Africa and leave Augustine carrying baptismal joy together with grief.

It came about, as I believe, through your hidden ways of arranging things, that she and I stood alone, leaning against a certain window from which we looked out upon the garden inside the house that sheltered us, there at Ostia on the Tiber, where, removed from the crowds after the labor of a long journey, we were restoring ourselves for the sea voyage.

Thus on the ninth day of her illness, in the fifty-sixth year of her age and the thirty-third year of mine, that devout and faithful soul was released from the body.

It pleased me to weep before you over her and for her, over myself and for myself. I released the tears that I had held back, so that they might flow as much as they wished, spreading them beneath my heart; and it rested in them, because your ears were there, not the ears of some human being who would interpret my weeping arrogantly.
