Song Meaning
"The Vigil" opens on the waiting that precedes Augustine's baptism in Milan. The music imagines the quiet of the Easter vigil: fasting, gathered expectation, and a soul standing at the threshold of a new life. Augustine recalls in Confessions Book IX that he was baptized with his son Adeodatus and his friend Alypius, and that the anxiety of his former life fell away. The track does not try to narrate every detail of that night. Instead, its sparse beginning and gradual warmth give emotional form to readiness – the long silence before grace is received. As the basilica doors seem to open at midnight, uncertainty becomes anticipation. This is the sound of a restless heart no longer fleeing, but waiting to enter the life it has finally chosen.
