Song Meaning
“Two Ways” presents the spiritual life as a choice between a path of shadow and a path of light. Inspired by Saint Ambrose’s Commentary on Psalm 1, the lyrics gather the Psalm’s central images: the way of the righteous, the seat of scoffers, the tree beside flowing water, and the chaff scattered by the wind. Ambrose describes sin as a gradual movement. A person first walks according to corrupt counsel, then stands among sinners, and finally sits comfortably in what once seemed wrong. The song brings that choice inside the singer: “Two ways rise within me.” The struggle is not only between two groups of people but between competing desires within the heart. One path offers pride, laughter, and fading footsteps. The other grows quietly beside the river of wisdom and mercy. Its roots deepen before the storm arrives. The song asks for more than a correct decision made once. It asks for footsteps, roots, habits, and even music to be shaped by the way that leads home. There are two ways: one of the righteous, the other of sinners; one of equity, the other of iniquity. Of the latter the Prophet said: “See whether the way of iniquity is in me” (Psal. CXXXVIII, 24). Thus not only is our life a way, but within our very life there is either the way of virtue or the way of iniquity.
