Song Meaning
“Two Ways” presents the spiritual life as a choice between a path of shadow and a path of light. Inspired by Saint Ambrose’s Commentary on Psalm 1, the lyrics gather the Psalm’s central images: the way of the righteous, the seat of scoffers, the tree beside flowing water, and the chaff scattered by the wind. Ambrose describes sin as a gradual movement. A person first walks according to corrupt counsel, then stands among sinners, and finally sits comfortably in what once seemed wrong.
