Song Meaning

“Window of Ascent (Instrumental)” interprets Augustine and Monica’s famous conversation at Ostia. Leaning at a window overlooking the garden, they ask what the eternal life of the saints might be. Their speech rises beyond bodily pleasure, the earth, the heavens, and even the soul’s changing thoughts until, for an instant, they touch the region of inexhaustible abundance where God feeds Israel forever with truth. Then they return to ordinary speech and the sound of words beginning and ending in time. The music follows that movement without trying to reproduce a mystical experience. Piano and suspended textures gradually loosen the sense of earthly weight; luminous guitar reaches upward; silence receives the ascent when melody can go no farther. The return remains essential. Augustine and Monica do not escape creation permanently, but receive a moment that reorders their hope. The window becomes both physical threshold and spiritual image: a finite opening through which desire reaches toward eternal Wisdom.

Song Inspiration

Augustine’s Confessions Book 9, chapter 10, where he and Monica converse at an Ostia window and ascend in thought beyond created things toward a momentary touch of eternal Wisdom.

It came about, as I believe, through your hidden ways of arranging things, that she and I stood alone, leaning against a certain window from which we looked out upon the garden inside the house that sheltered us, there at Ostia on the Tiber, where, removed from the crowds after the labor of a long journey, we were restoring ourselves for the sea voyage.

Our conversation was brought to this conclusion: that no delight of the bodily senses, however great and in however great a bodily light, seemed worthy not only of comparison but even of mention beside the joy of that life.

While we spoke and thirsted for her, we touched her slightly with the whole thrust of the heart; and we sighed and left there, bound fast, the firstfruits of the spirit, and returned to the noise of our mouths, where a word both begins and ends.
